Verra is a leading global standard-setter committed to helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve livelihoods and protect natural resources by working with the private and public sector. Their Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) accounts for roughly two-thirds of all voluntary carbon offsets in the world. The new Plastic Waste Reduction Program is part of a plastic stewardship initiative that was launched together with the 3R Initiative, a coalition committed to achieving zero plastic waste. Plastic projects that verifiably reduce plastic waste by implementing collection and/or recycling activities are issued a corresponding amount of Plastic Credits by Verra. The Plastic Credits can be purchased by companies that want to further mitigate their own plastic footprint by investing in collection and recycling projects that reduce plastic pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, help improve livelihoods and protect marine ecosystems.
To ensure that projects meet the strict requirements of the Plastic Waste Reduction Standard (Plastic Standard), and to assess the extent to which they have actually reduced plastic waste and/or increased recycling, each project has to be independently audited. This process consists of validation before or during project implementation, and periodic verifications during and after project implementation. Control Union Certifications is excited to announce it is now able to offer these validation and verification services for projects participating in the Plastic Program. CUC has been a frontrunner in the area of Plastic certifications, having built experience and expertise through both developing and auditing standards such as Plastic Free and Ocean Bound Plastic. CUC is pleased to further expand its services in this area with the addition of the Plastic Waste Reduction Program to its wide range of certification programs. For more detailed information on the Plastic Standard and its application, please visit the Verra website.
