As has been widely reported on the
BBC and
elsewhere today, the Scottish Fisheries Sustainable Accreditation Group (SFSAG) North Sea cod fishery has been assessed and certified against the
MSC Fisheries Standard for sustainable fishing and has been found to meet the criteria for a well-managed and sustainable fishery. As the Conformity Assessment Body (CAB) and certifier of this fishery,
ME Certification Limited would like to congratulate SFSAG and acknowledge the considerable effort by industry, processors and NGOs to bring the cod stock back to sustainable levels.
Mike Park, Chairman of the
Scottish Fisheries Sustainable Accreditation Group (SFSAG), commentson the subject via
MSC’s website : “This is a massive development for the catching sector and is a testament to the power of collective action. The years of commitment to rebuilding North Sea cod has shown that fishermen are responsible and can be trusted to deliver stable and sustainable stocks. The consumer can now eat home-caught cod with a clear conscience.”
