Control Union South Africa is very excited to announce the exclusive partnership with the South African Organic Sector Organisation (SAOSO) in order to further develop and strengthen the organic sector in South Africa.
Control Union is the very first accredited certification body to offer organic audits and certification against the South African private organic standard. We will be the exclusive certification body offering this service to organic clients in the coming years.
SAOSO is recognized by the South African Government as the representative organization of the national organic agriculture sector. The aim is to create, maintain, and service a vibrant, cooperative and credible organic community, providing valuable services to the environment and society while providing healthy food for local communities and opening up opportunities with international markets.
With local demand for organic produce growing exponentially and South Africa a net importer of organic produce, we see increasing distribution opportunities for farmers of organic produce. The sector has grown through third-party international standards. Now, through the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS), we see the smallholder farmers able to enter into the sector, supported by knowledge exchange and distribution mechanisms.
There is equivalency between SAOSO and the EU, NOP, JAS standards. An onsite audit is still needed if EU, NOP and/or JAS certified, to verify the social requirements of the SAOSO standard, as this is not a requirement for EU, NOP, JAS. The equivalency is only from EU, NOP, JAS to SAOSO. Separate EU, NOP, JAS audits are thus needed if you would like to comply to these three standards!
Control Union is a 100-year old certification and inspection company with 100+ offices worldwide. Control Union South Africa has auditors and certifiers based within the country. Other services offered by us include, among many others, GlobalG.A.P., BRC, FSSC 22000, SIZA, SMETA and Vegan Standard audits.
