ISCC is already widely known as a leading voluntary scheme recognised under the EU Renewable Energy Directive, with a focus on fuels for road and rail transport. The ISCC scheme is now also eligible for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), as it meets the requirements of CORSIA, which has been setup by the ICAO.
In the fight against climate change, the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has been recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The ICAO Member States have set ambitious targets to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in aviation, for which the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) scheme has been setup. Since February 2021, Control Union is the first recognised certification body for ISCC CORSIA.
With the ISCC CORSIA scheme, fuel producers and companies along the supply chain can now demonstrate compliance with the CORSIA sustainability criteria.
CORSIA eligible fuels must meet the following criteria
- Greenhouse Gases: a reduced net carbon emission of at least 10% compared to the baseline life cycle emissions
- Carbon Stock: eligible fuels should not be made from biomass obtained from land with high carbon stock and may not be grown on land with land use change of such land on or after 01 January 2008
CORSIA eligible fuels can be produced from already known feedstocks for biofuels and other renewable fuels of non-biological origin such as waste and synthetic based fuels, referred to as RFNBOs (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin).
